By the end of the C19th, Birmingham was regarded as the ‘best governed city in Britain’ . This lecture tells the story of Birmingham’s civic gospel, of the physical and aesthetic transformation it inspired and the men; George Dawson, Joseph Chamberlain and others who dedicated their lives and fortunes to create schools, public spaces and museums as well as reforming sanitation, the water supply and other civic amenities.
