SUMMARY:Two Newdigate Ladies
DESCRIPTION:A talk by David Patterson \n\n\n\nThe Talk recounts how two widowed ladies of the Warwickshire gentry\, in similar circumstances\, 100 years apart\, ran the same 8\,000 acre estate\, on behalf of their young sons and contributed substantially both to the family fortunes and the well being of the area. Lady Elizabeth Newdigate in the 1730’s and Mrs Maria Newdegate in the 1830s had temporary charge of the Arbury estate: both showed determination\, competence and insight in equal measure\, making a major contribution to the development of the area around Chivers Coton. Maria influenced two other women: Jessie Boucherett\, an early campaigner for women’s rights and Marian Evans\, better known as George Eliot.

DESCRIPTION:I am sorry to have to announce that we have had to make a change to the planned talk for our next meeting on Tuesday 17th September. Our speaker\, Andrew Reekes\, who was to have talked to us about the work of the Civic Gospel in Birmingham\, has had to cancel for personal reasons. \nWe have been fortunate in persuading Tim Clark\, who is already scheduled to talk to us in December on the subject of the Beauchamp Chapel in St Mary’s Warwick\, to give an additional talk for our September meeting on English Art Before the Reformation. Tim explains that ‘It’s thought that over 90% of English art was destroyed in the Reformation\, but it’s still possible to find some fascinating and stunning art that survived. Tim will be reviewing some of the key pieces that we can still enjoy and show how English art evolved over the centuries.’ \nAs well as giving us a bit of history of the art from the period when the Beauchamp Chapel was built and\, as he disarmingly says\, allowing him to show us lots of pretty pictures\, this talk will provide some useful context for his talk in December. \nTim is a knowledgeable and engaging speaker so I am confident that this talk will complement our December talk well and prove a worthy addition to our programme. \nWe hope to reschedule Andrew Reekes for a later date.

SUMMARY:The Warwick Bank Crash
DESCRIPTION:A talk by Rick Thompson \nThe Warwick & Warwickshire Bank owned by the Greenway family had been a trusted provincial bank for nearly a century. But on September 6th\, 1887 the bank’s buildings in Leamington and Warwick were closed with notices saying business had been suspended. The bank had gone bust with huge debts and depositors were told they had lost all their money. A sensational trial of the Greenway brothers followed with their effigies being burnt in the High Street.

DESCRIPTION:A talk by Stephen Wass \nStephen was contracted by the National Trust to review the park and gardens at Baddesley Clinton in the light of new LIDAR images they had commissioned. During the course of the work\, several new sites were discovered and the whole history of the gardens rewritten. The talk will provide an overview of the images and highlight the main discoveries. This is the latest in a series of garden archaeology projects he has undertaken.

SUMMARY:The Sweet Life in Bourneville
DESCRIPTION:A talk by Bob Booth \nIn 1879\, George and Richard Cadbury moved their factory from the city centre to the Bournbrook Estate some four miles distant. Transport links were good and there was clean water from the River Bourn. They named the new factory site Bournville. George Cadbury was appalled at working class living conditions and wanted to provide decent housing for his workers. He planned a model village of well built cottages with large gardens.

SUMMARY:Archaeological Finds at Bagington
DESCRIPTION:Nigel Page joins us to give a talk about finds from an excavation at Bagington \nThe talk will focus on the Anglo-Saxon Archaeological finds at Baginton\, adjacent to the Lunt Roman Fort. The dig was completed before the building work on the new Jaguar Land Rover site started. \nNigel is a Senior archaeologist with Warwickshire Archaeology\, which is part of Warwickshire County Council. \nEarlier evaluation of the site by Oxford Archaeology in 2012 had identified a few features of interest and\, perhaps most importantly\, a cremation cemetery. It was thought likely that this was associated directly with the Roman fort or the local Anglo-Saxon neighbourhood or settlement. \nThe site proved to be a very large archaeology dig site and the underlying geology consisted mostly of sand which is easy to dig\, even without modern tools. The cremation cemetery contained over sixty burials. Items within burials included numerous complete pots\, two mirrors\, two glass bottles\, brooches\, the odd coin (one definitely of Vespasian)\, pins\, a ring with an intaglio and the remains of at least two copper bound boxes plus a copper alloy hanging bowl. The star feature consisted of a large pit with 23 near complete pots and an oil lamp.
